Compost Facility

Operating Season

The facility is operated from approximately April through November, depending on weather. The facility employs seasonal part-time gatekeepers and is open seven days a week, through the operating season.

Permitted Materials

The facility accepts tree debris and yard waste. The Street Division processes the materials into wood chip mulch and compost. There is a charge for all materials going in and going out. Some General Fund money is used to subsidize the facility.

The local landfill does not accept trees, branches, leaves, brush, or yard and garden waste for disposal. These items should be brought to the Compost Facility.

Disposal Fees (Approved Contractors & Vendors)

City of Marshalltown approved / labeled compost bags are sold at HyVee, Fareway, Menards, Theisens and the Compost Facility. Disposal of these bags at the Compost facility is free.

All non-approved bags (excluding Kraft paper / City approved bags) and other containers must be removed from the site. View the compost fee schedule (PDF).
