Work is now underway on South Center Street/Highway 14, and there is excitement over the transformation that will take place to the medians. In 2017 the City Council did a survey of residents to determine what people wanted to happen with the medians, which are deteriorated, broken and crumbling in many locations between Anson Street and the southern City limits. The overwhelming choice was to move forward with plantings and colored pavers to provide an aesthetic appeal in addition to the newly surfaced roadway which is part of the Iowa DOT's project. The City then worked with the Iowa DOT to include rehabilitation and updates to the medians as part of the overall project. Bids came in very favorable, with the bid total for the median upgrades at nearly $250,000, which was $100,000 less than the construction estimate. "It is exciting to see the medians not just being
replaced, but being improved," Mayor Joel Greer said. "Highway 14
is the main gateway to our fine city, and the more attractive visitors find the
entrances and main thoroughfares, the more they will want to stay and play, or
work or live here. The architects’ and
engineers’ plans look pretty sweet. And
for those of us already living and working here, it will make us Marshalltown
stronger and prouder!"
