On January 9, 2018 at 8:06 pm, the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) responded with Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) and Unity Point EMS to 537 N. 2nd Street on a reported house fire. On arrival MFD personnel observed smoke coming from the eaves of the building. The homeowner was on scene and stated everyone was out of the residence. Crews made entry into the home and found fire on the first floor near a stairway leading to the upper floor. Portions of the wall and ceiling were removed to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and damage is estimated at $13,000. Investigation determined the fire to be electrical in nature.
