At approximately 5 A.M. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to 107 E. North Street in Marshalltown, IA for a structure fire. Upon arrival, a two-car detached garage was found with a working fire with no other structures exposed to fire. Fire crews quickly brought the fire under control without incident. Firefighters were at the scene for approximately 90 minutes.
When police arrived, they encountered an occupant of the property attempting to rescue some property from the burning structure. As a result, the victim sustained burns and was transported to the scene by Unity Point EMS. According to Unity Point Health, the victim “has extensive burns and is being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for further treatment”.
The fire originated in the adjoining wall of a newly installed wood burning stove in the garage. The cause of the fire was determined to be flammable liquids stored too close to a source of combustion. Marshalltown Police, Marshalltown Public Works, Unity Point Health EMS, and Alliant Energy assisted the Fire Department at the scene.
