Now that the winter weather has ended many residents will be turning their attention to yard clean up and with that comes the burning of yard waste. The Marshalltown Fire Department would like to remind residents that while open burning of yard waste is allowed, there are guidelines that need to be followed. They include:
Burning is for yard waste only, no trash or rubbish.
Burning is limited to single-family homes. Open burning by businesses is prohibited unless a burn permit has been authorized and obtained from the Marshalltown Fire Department.
Burning hours are as follows:
Monday thru Friday – 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Saturday – 7:00 am to noon.
Sundays and Holidays – No Burning
If burning on the ground, a minimum distance of 50 feet to a building must be maintained.
If burning in a container, a minimum distance of 15 feet to a building must be maintained.
The fire must be constantly supervised with a means to control the fire (ex. garden hose).
Burning on public streets, alleys, or property of another is prohibited.
It is unlawful to burn within 20 feet of any part of a pine or spruce tree.
Please use good judgment as to wind conditions and take into consideration those with respiratory conditions take are worsened by the smoke. Violations of the open burning rules that require a response by the Marshalltown Fire Department will be subject to a response fee.
