The City of Marshalltown completed an initial damage assessment of all properties on Thursday, following the powerful derecho on Monday. The numbers show damage that was more extensive than the 2018 tornado, but less catastrophic. A total 2,778 commercial and residential structures and 126 mobile homes. As a point of comparison, the 2018 tornado damaged 2,020 properties.
Here is the breakdown by damage type:
Affected: 2,052
Minor: 568
Major: 151
Destroyed: 7
The classifications come from FEMA’s non-flood damage definitions in the FEMA Preliminary Damage Assessment Guide.
Structures in the major and destroyed classification are being assessed by the City’s Building Official and are being placarded as dangerous buildings when warranted.
