The council had intended to fill the vacancy by appointment and published a notice of their intent on December 22, 2017. The council interviewed four applicants on January 5, 2018, and were unable to appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy at the January 8, 2018. At the January 8, 2018, meeting, the Council voted 5-1 to direct staff to prepare a Resolution for their consideration at the January 22, 2018, council meeting to fill the vacancy of the 2nd Ward council representative by special election.
Joel T.S. Greer was elected in November to replace James Lowrance as Mayor. Greer served as the 2nd Ward council representative, leaving the 2nd Ward without a representative on January 1, 2018. Greer's 2nd Ward term was to expire December 31, 2019.
City staff are working with the Marshall County Auditor's office to determine when the special election to fill the vacancy will occur.
