MEDIA RELEASE: 08/10/18
Although this is not a new fraud nationwide, it has recently shown up in Marshalltown. A scammer will list a home for rent on Craigslist that is also legitimately listed for sale on multiple listing services. The scammer will use false email addresses and telephone numbers that appear legitimate.
Potential renters contacting the scammers will be told to send money if they like the home with the promise of getting the keys in the mail.
The Marshalltown Police Department warns against sending money for a rental agreement without meeting the landlord in person at the residence. Your safest option to work with a local real estate company or rental company. Before signing any contract or sending any money, check the landlord’s references, contact a realtor face to face and perform a simple check of the property through your county assessor’s office.
If you feel you are the victim of a fraud, please contact the police department as soon as possible, submit an Internet complaint at www.ic3.gov and check your bank and credit statements for unusual activity.
