Imposter scams are very common. These scams frequently target the elderly.
An imposter scam involving the FTC has been sweeping Iowa. Scammers are using the Federal Trade Commission’s name to trick people into paying them — or sharing personal information. Someone might call, email, text, or message you on social media, claiming to be from the Federal Trade Commission. They might even use the name of a person who really works at the FTC, including staff, contractors, and even Commissioners. The FTC will never do this. These are always scams.
If someone says they are from the FTC, or another government entity, and they tell you that you have won money, or are eligible for grants, but you need to pay them taxes or fees first, these are ALWAYS SCAMS. Don't send money. Don't provide personal information. Stop communicating with these crooks.
