Speeding and aggressive driving has become a problem of epidemic proportions across the United States. Marshalltown has not been immune from this problem. Street racing especially is an issue we are hearing more about from concerned community members. Street racing places the safety of our community in jeopardy and will not be tolerated.
On Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 12:23am, a Marshalltown police officer witnessed a street race taking place on South Center Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicles involved. Speeds were estimated to be 80-100mph during this attempted intervention. One of the suspect vehicles eventually crashed while attempting to navigate the westbound on-ramp for Highway 30. Thankfully, nobody was injured. The driver of the vehicle that crashed was apprehended and arrested.
Miguel Angel Garcia, age 22, of Marshalltown was charged with:
- Drag Racing
- Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle
- Speeding
- Dark Windows Violation
Mr. Garcia was taken to the Marshall County Jail where he posted cash bond to obtain release.
Chief Tupper stated, “Street racing is dangerous and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be held accountable and will be taken to jail.”
