On Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 3:00pm, police officers responded to 1101 South 5th Avenue after receiving a request to conduct a welfare check at this location. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 78-year-old male had been severely beaten and needed emergency medical attention. A preliminary investigation revealed the victim had been assaulted by his adult son. The victim was transported to a medical facility for emergency care.
On January 7, 2023, police officers arrested Scott David Swartz, age 47, of Marshalltown. Swartz has been charged with:
- Attempt to Commit Murder
- Domestic Abuse Assault – Second Offense
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of Methamphetamine – First Offense

On January 7, Swartz was transported to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and remains in the custody of the sheriff.
