Compost Facility - Closed for 2025 Season

Home - City News Posted on December 02, 2025

With the snowfall we received this past weekend and continued cold temperatures in the forecast, it is anticipated that the snowpack will remain for the foreseeable future into the winter; therefore, the Marshalltown Compost Facility is now closed for the 2025 Compost Season.

The 2026 Compost Season will start based on Spring's weather and will be determined at a later date.  Typically, the facility opens around the first of April.

Plan Ahead – “Real” Christmas Tree Drop Off - As you prepare for the Christmas season, especially those the love the smell of a real/live Christmas Tree – keep them watered & do you know how will you dispose of the tree after the Holidays, so it does not become a fire hazard?

The City of Marshalltown allows residents to drop off their Christmas trees at the Marshalltown Compost Facility at no charge. We only accept "previously" live trees that have been cut (no artificial) and the stand along with all artificial items, wire hangers, tinsel, and ornaments must be completely removed. Look for the sign and drop-off area outside the gate @ 900 Woodland Street, Marshalltown - IA.

FAQ: Q - I have goats, can I pick up any dropped off trees to feed to my goats? A – Yes, if there are trees in the Christmas tree holding area, you may pick them up to feed to your goats.

Please Note - This facility and drop off area is under camera surveillance.
