Two boards that community members are involved with that are large aspects of the planning process here in Marshalltown are the: Board of Adjustment, and Plan Zoning Commission. All members must be residents of the City of Marshalltown.
The Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial board. They decide on applications by residents to permit buildings or land uses which vary from the zoning regulations, hear appeals of decisions made by the zoning administrators, and interpret unclear provisions in the zoning ordinances.

Many items that are presented to the Board of Adjustments relate to Real Estate, which is a great passion of mine. The Plan Zoning Commission has a key role in the planning process here in Marshalltown. They act as an advisory board to the City Council on planning and development topics. The Commission reviews development application for commercial and residential projects for new construction within city limits.

Currently the City of Marshalltown has multiple Community Plans. The purpose of all these plans is to set goals for the future; and to layout a path to achieving community goals. The city is in the process of a Zoning Code rewrite, and for the second phase of Downtown Planning.
