Marshalltown Municipal Transit was recognized as the Most Improved Urban Transit System last week at the Iowa Public Transit Association's annual conference held in Newton.  This award is based upon an increase of annual ridership and a decrease in overall operating costs in fiscal year 2018.  Other cities in Iowa considered urban transit systems include Ames, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Waterloo, Bettendorf, Council Bluffs, Iowa City, University of Iowa, Coralville, Dubuque, Sioux City, Burlington, Clinton, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Muscatine, Marshalltown, and Ottumwa.

"I am very proud of all of my staff with achieving this award and I hope we continue the progress and become one of the best transit agency's in the State of Iowa," Kevin Pigors, Transit Administrator stated.  Pigors served as Interim Transit Administrator in November and was named Administrator in January.  Justin Nickel, City Engineer/Public Works Director, says this recognition is due to purely to Pigors' and his staff.  "He is proactive and has re-established connections within the community that help make our transit system more successful.  I think this is just the first of many awards to come."

"More riders equals more federal and state funding to help keep our system financially viable," City Administrator Jessica Kinser commented.  "If we bring in funding from outside sources, we can then reduce the amount of funding we have to provide locally."  Besides federal and state funding, Marshalltown Municipal Transit is funded by $0.36 of the total City tax levy as well as fares and ridership fees.
