Housing Repairs Underway

Many houses in Marshalltown are in need of repairs as a result of the July 19 tornado event. Since the tornado, the Region 6 Housing Trust Fund has completed roof repairs on five houses in Marshalltown with work to begin shortly on an additional 13  projects. For the first phase of tornado housing rehabilitation, Region 6 is prioritizing roof-related repairs and replacements. 


With cold weather on the way, Region 6 will be working closely with partners such as Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) and the Marshalltown Long Term Family Recovery Committee to identify houses in need of roof-related rehabilitation work. The Region 6 Housing Trust Fund is a part of Marshalltown Long Term Family Recovery Committee, which is working to address the long-term housing needs of Marshalltown following the July tornado event. 


The Marshalltown Long Term Family Recovery Committee is committed to assisting all affected Marshalltown families achieve full recovery from the effects of this past summer’s tornado.  The committee works to: build capacity for collaboration and coordination; increase awareness about the impact of the disaster; use data and confirmed information to make decisions and allocate resources; operate in a transparent manner; avoid duplication of effort and resources; and provide a united and consistent voice regarding recovery.  


To apply for Region 6 funding for roof repairs and to get more information about program eligibility requirements, visit www.region6planning.org, call 641-752-0717 or stop by the office at 903 E. Main St. All eligible households with exterior housing needs are encouraged to apply, but roof-related repairs will be prioritized. For non-roof exterior repairs such as siding, windows, soffits and fascia, applications will be placed on a waiting list on a first-come, first-serve basis. These needs will be addressed if funding is available after all roof work has been completed. No funding is available for personal property items or rental housing.


The Region 6 Housing Trust Fund was organized as a non-profit in 2009 to assist Hardin, Marshall, Poweshiek and Tama Counties in expanding the supply of quality affordable housing.  Financial contributors to the Region 6 Housing Trust Fund include the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) and individual counties. The Region 6 Housing Trust Fund is administered by the Region 6 Planning Commission, a public intergovernmental organization.
